Coach Amari
Amari Tate was born and raised on the Westside of Chicago. She is currently pursuing studies in youth development, psychology, and African American studies. Amari works as a kindergarten teacher at a social justice school that emphasizes restorative practices. In addition, she serves as the head coach and mentor for a girls’ middle school basketball team. Her work is dedicated to bridging the gap between urban youth and society, restoring power within families, communities, and future generations.
Amari is also a beginner chess player and has been coaching with A Step Ahead Chess (ASAC) for a year. She is passionate about teaching young people all she knows about life while learning from them in return, both on and off the chessboard. Amari takes pride in her progress, having started with little knowledge of chess and now playing at a competitive level. She credits the Stormers for teaching her much of what she knows about the game and looks forward to continuing her growth alongside them in the years to come.
