A Step Ahead Chess (ASAC) is a mission-driven nonprofit based in Chicago, IL, committed to shaping the next generation of bold thinkers, strategic problem-solvers, and visionary leaders—one move at a time.
We believe that chess is more than a game. It's a powerful equalizer—unlocking potential, building confidence, and leveling the playing field for youth from every background. Through dynamic programming in schools and communities, we equip young minds with the skills they need to navigate life’s complexities, both on and off the board.

At A Step Ahead Chess, we don’t just teach strategy—we teach resilience. We help our STORMERS! reframe setbacks as stepping stones, preparing them to bounce back stronger and smarter.
Whether it’s losing a match or facing challenges in the classroom, our STORMERS! learn to analyze, adapt, and advance—always thinking one move ahead. This mindset of growth, perseverance, and emotional intelligence is what truly sets our program apart.
Why Chess? Why Now?
Chess is more than a game. It’s a tool for equity, character-building, and cognitive development. Studies consistently show that chess improves academic performance, boosts emotional resilience, and enhances decision-making skills. Or as we say here at ASAC, it creates STORMERS! But too often, access to this powerful resource is reserved for the few.
We’re changing that. By bringing high-quality chess education directly into schools, after-school programs, and community spaces, we are leveling the playing field—one student, one move, one game at a time.
